Cranberry Orange Sweet Rolls

It's Christmas Eve! Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!!

I finally feel like I’ve gotten a moment to slow down and catch my breath. So obviously I started baking. I’ve been dreaming of these sweet rolls for weeks and am so glad I finally got to bring my vision to life! 

I don’t have much to say today simply because I’m trying to enjoy this time with my family. This is the first time the four of us have been together since August!

Cranberry Orange Sweet Rolls

These sweet rolls are delicious! Perfectly fully, amazingly simple. They are the perfect breakfast for the holiday season. The tangy cranberry flavor is perfectly offset by the sweet orange cream cheese frosting.

  • 1/4 cup warm water 105-115 degrees Fahrenheit
  • 1 packet active dry yeast 2 1/4 tsp
  • 3 cups bread flour separated
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 6 tbsp butter softened

Cranberry Compote

  • 12 oz fresh cranberries
  • zest of one orange
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger

Orange Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • 2 1/2 - 3 cups powdered sugar
  • zest of one orange
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice


Cranberry Compote

  • Bring cranberries, maple syrup, orange juice, and orange zest to a boil in a medium saucepan. Mash with a fork. Stir in ginger and cinnamon. Let simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool completely.

Sweet Roll Dough

  • In a large bowl combine water and active dry yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes. Add 1/2 cup bread flour, sugar, milk, eggs, vanilla extract and salt. Mix until combined. Gradually stir in 2 - 2 1/2 cups bread flour. Let sit for 15 minutes.
  • Knead dough on low speed for 5-7 minutes, or by hand for 10. Knead in butter until fully incorporated into the dough. Transfer dough to a butter bowl and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.
  • Roll dough out on a floured surface into a 16x12 inch rectangle. Spread cranberry compote on the dough. Starting from the long side, form the dough into a tight roll. Cut roll into 12 equal slices. Place rolls into a prepared 9x13 inch baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
  • Remove baking dish from fridge and let rolls reach room temperature. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake sweet rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool slightly.

Orange Cream Cheese Frosting

  • In a large bowl, beat softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, orange zest and orange juice until creamy. Pour frosting over warm rolls.
